Isaiah 11:1
And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:

Study Note
The messianic shoot from Jesse's stump responds to the immediately preceding oracle of the fall of the great Assyrian forest (10:33-34) by envisioning a new Davidic king who will emerge from the apparently dead dynastic 'stump.' The imagery of a branch (Hebrew: netzer) from Jesse — David's father rather than David himself — may suggest a return to the dynasty's humble origins and a fresh start. The seven-fold Spirit resting on the messianic figure (verses 2-3) — wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, fear of the LORD — provided a template for theological reflection on the Spirit and became central to early Christian Christology (Luke 4:18; Isaiah 61:1). Paul quotes 11:10 in Romans 15:12, confirming the Gentile-inclusive scope of the Isaianic messianic vision.
