Study Note

The third Servant Song opens with the Servant describing his formation as a disciple: 'the Lord God hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary.' The 'tongue of the learned' (leshon limmudim, literally 'tongue of disciples') establishes the Servant as paradigmatically a receiver before a speaker — formed daily by divine instruction ('morning by morning he wakeneth mine ear') before being sent to comfort others. The Servant's suffering (vv. 6–7) is thus framed as a disciple's suffering: not passive victimhood but the consequence of sustained receptivity to divine teaching and subsequent faithful proclamation. Jesus' use of Isaiah 50 in the Passion narratives (Luke 22:37; Matthew 26:67: 'they smote him with rods') and the figure of the 'weary' to whom the Servant speaks anticipating Matthew 11:28's invitation suggest this Song's pervasive christological influence.
