Study Note
Jeremiah's polemic against idols (10:1-16) reaches its climax in the positive declaration: 'But the LORD is the true God; he is the living God, the eternal King.' The contrast between idols (made of wood and metal, unable to speak or move) and YHWH (true, living, eternal) is the most concentrated statement of anti-idol theology outside Deutero-Isaiah. The trembling of the earth and the inability of nations to endure his wrath grounds theological claims in cosmological authority. The verse is connected to 1 Thessalonians 1:9's description of conversion as turning 'from idols to serve the living and true God' — a phrase that appears to be a formula drawn from the Jeremianic and Isaianic tradition.
