Study Note
The declaration 'but there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and maketh known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days' presents Daniel's interpretive ability as divine gift rather than human wisdom, explicitly distinguishing himself from the court magicians who 'cannot shew unto the king the interpretation thereof' (2:27). The phrase 'a God in heaven' asserts the transcendence of Daniel's God over the earth-bound deities of Babylon — including Bel, Marduk, and Nebo — who are immanent but not genuinely sovereign. The 'latter days' (be'aharith yomayya') introduces the eschatological horizon that dominates chapters 7-12 and marks Daniel as an apocalyptic work concerned with the divine direction of human history toward a final goal. Revelation draws extensively on Daniel's 'revelation of secrets' framework for its own apocalyptic claims.
