Study Note

The address 'thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre' presents the king of a royal wedding-psalm with the divine title 'God' (Elohim), a usage so striking that Hebrews 1:8-9 quotes it as a direct address of the Father to the Son — making it one of the New Testament's strongest Christological appropriations of the Psalter. The royal psalm (likely composed for a Davidic-dynasty wedding) describes the king in terms that exceed any historical monarch, pointing forward to the ideal ruler whose justice is eternal. The 'right sceptre' (shebet mishor, sceptre of uprightness) ties the eternal throne to moral character — the kingdom's perpetuity is grounded in its justice, not merely its power. Revelation 19:11-16's rider on the white horse who 'in righteousness doth judge and make war' fulfils the royal eschatology of Psalm 45.
