Study Note

The declaration 'the Lord on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea' employs the ancient Near Eastern chaos-water mythology — in which the sea represents the primordial threats to cosmic order — to affirm YHWH's incomparable sovereignty over every threatening power. Psalm 93 is one of the 'enthronement psalms' (93, 95-99) that celebrate YHWH as king, using the sea-conquest motif that runs through Psalm 74:13-14, Isaiah 51:9-10, and Job 38:8-11 (God setting bounds for the sea). The theological move is from nature to history: the God who rules the literal sea also rules the 'sea' of chaotic historical forces — national, political, personal. Revelation 4:6 and 15:2's 'sea of glass' before God's throne represents the eschatological pacification of the chaos-waters — the final victory over all threatening powers that Psalm 93 proleptically celebrates.
