Study Note
'And ye shall rejoice before the Lord your God, ye, and your sons, and your daughters, and your menservants, and your maidservants, and the Levite that is within your gates' — the centralization of worship at the chosen place (verse 11: 'the place which the Lord your God shall choose') in Deuteronomy 12 is designed not to concentrate privilege but to ensure that all worship is purified of Canaanite syncretism while remaining inclusive of the marginalized. The repeated joy-command ('ye shall rejoice') resists any equation of Deuteronomy's reform with joyless centralism; celebration before God is the commanded posture, with household members and servants explicitly included rather than relegated to the periphery of religious life.
