Study Note

Moses's instruction to 'remember the whole way that the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not' reframes the wilderness hardship as divine pedagogy rather than punitive abandonment. The three verbs — humble, test, know — describe a graduated process of formation designed to reveal and reshape the inner disposition of the covenant people. The parallel command to remember ('zakar') operates as the structural principle of Deuteronomy's theology of history: identity is constituted by keeping the past narrated correctly before each new generation. The verse provides the hermeneutical framework for the New Testament's reading of Jesus's wilderness temptations (Matthew 4:1-11) as the recapitulation of Israel's wilderness testing, but with faithfulness where Israel failed.
