Study Note

The declaration that the disobedient will 'leave your name for a curse unto my chosen: for the Lord God shall slay thee, and call his servants by another name' anticipates the transfer of covenant identity from ethnic Israel to the 'chosen servants' who respond to God's new-creation invitation (65:17). The 'other name' promised to the servants has been read christologically (those called Christians — Acts 11:26 — receiving the new name prophesied here) and eschatologically (Revelation 2:17's 'new name' written on the white stone for the overcomers). The contrast between 'a curse' (for those who reject) and the new covenant name (for the servants) mirrors the Deuteronomic blessing-and-curse structure, now applied eschatologically rather than nationally. The verse forms part of the foundation for Paul's argument in Romans 9:6-8 that 'not all who are of Israel are Israel' — the true Israel is constituted by election and response, not hereditary membership.
